QUARMBY
WILLIAM QUARMBY of Warley,
Yorkshire, engine tenter, was born ca 1788[1] and died on 29/30 May
1838 at Sowerby Bridge, Yorkshire.[2] He married on 1
January 1809 at Halifax, MARY BERRY.[3] Mary was born ca 1789[4] and died on 9 May 1877
at Warley, Yorkshire.[5]

[1] His death certificate gives his age as 49˝ years.
[2] William's death certificate gives the date as 30 May 1838, but the entry
for his burial in the Sowerby Bridge parish registers gives the date of death
as 29 May. He was buried on 3 June.

Mary’s surname is spelt “Berrey” in the marriage entry.
[4] Mary’s place of birth is variously given as Deanhead (National Archives,
1851 census returns, Warley, HO 107/2300, fol. 343), Sla[i]thwaite (National
Archives, 1861 census returns, Warley, RG 9/3291, fol. 5) and Halifax (National
Archives, 1871 census returns, Warley, RG 10/4410, fol. 14). One of the
witnesses at the marriage of Mary to William Quarmby was a John Berrey. The
baptism on 26 Feb 1792 of a Mally, daughter of Joseph Berry of Scammonden,
clothier, is recorded in the parish registers of West Scammonden (Deanhead)
(West Yorkshire Archive Service, WDP107/1).
